Mebane Travel Guide

Burlington, North Carolina is a great little town located in the north central portion of the state. Built to take advantage of the railroads that sprung up in the area prior to the Civil War, Burlington took on a role that has made its name well known through the country when the railroads began to fail.

Textiles have made Burlington a town that has survived several tough economic times. The city was at one time known as the "The Hosiery Center of the South". By the time of the Great Depression, Burlington had become too closely tied to one industry. In the years since the 1950s diversity of the economy has become the theme of the region. While textiles remain important it is no longer the number one employer in the area.

When in Burlington take some time to explore the many attractions and fun things to do. As a baseball fan, I found the Burlington Athletic Stadium a wonderful place to enjoy baseball in a pure form. The Burlington Indians are members of the Rookie Class Appalachian League. The stadium however is first class baseball fun. If you want some local history while visiting Burlington do not hesitate to drive through the Glencoe Village that is seeking to preserve the life of the textile workers who built this town.

What visit to a new place would be complete without an opportunity to do some shopping? Burlington is home to several great malls, some of which feature outlet shopping. Look for Tanager Outlet Mall, Burlington Manufacturer Outlet Mall and the University Mall when seeking great shopping or bargains.

Nearby Elon University has 4,300 students who study in outstanding liberal arts and sciences and professional programs. Elon is ranked 8th among 131 Southern universities by U.S. News & World Report and is listed among the nation's top 345 colleges by The Princeton Review.
